Before state creation

Gombe has deep historical roots connected to traditional emirates, farming communities, trade routes and the wider history of the old Bauchi area. The northern part is strongly linked with the Gombe Emirate, while the southern area is known for Tangale-Waja cultural groups and other traditional communities.

Gombe State was created from the old Bauchi State on 1 October 1996. Since then, it has grown into a major commercial and administrative centre in the North-East, with Gombe town serving as the state capital and main business hub.
